I had to explain to my child the difference between a spectrum and a scale - it's defined as a range of similar things, whereas a scale is a relational measure between two points. Since the word seems to cause so many problems, I propose replacing it with something like "toolkit", as in, "I have a spanner and a wrench but I don't have a drill."
