I mostly agree, but we do worship youth and have the expectation of older people being less able, which is rarely the case until you’re over 70. I am currently learning to code, and no old knee injury is impairing me.

Older women still have stories to tell, and we will have succeeded when we have more love stories where both parties are over fifty. The pairing of middle aged men with much younger women in films gets creepier and weirder the older I get.

Still, it has improved since the 1960s, when (I am told) they put you out to pasture at thirty.

As for “unrecognisable”, the comments were made about Renee Zelwegger and Jennifer Grey because people who had seen their films looked at them and didn’t know who they were. The criticism was fair, even if the industry is not.

Hollywood worships youth, thinness, whiteness, blondness and wealth. Telling more stories about people who don’t fit those narrow criteria is one way to show audiences that there isn’t just one definition of beauty.
