It’s not an either-or, nor is it a waste of time. There are plenty of 10–to-30-hour introductory courses you can take in a variety of areas, each extremely useful. If coding is not your job, you don’t need to have a degree in software engineering — but taking the intro will definitely help you understand the capabilities and limitations of each thing.
