That's fair, so I'll do it: I am sorry that I wore that costume and I would not wear it today.

My point was that, since values change over time, it is impossible to avoid being called out over something we do since we do not know now what will be considered offensive in future. Look at how Oscar Wilde went from hero to villain to hero back to villain again, depending on the mores of the time.

It’s fine — and advisable — to change our own behaviour in response to changing values, but we can’t future-proof ourselves against retrospective outrage.
