That's one hell of a generalization and part of what I view as the unhelpful, polarizing "battle of the sexes" that I see played out. I don't live in fear that men are going to assault or kill me, and most men do not live their lives in fear that women are going to laugh at them. I would be very, very miserable indeed if I had to live with the kind of overarching terror of the opposite sex that Americans seem to experience daily. (It looks like you're not American, but that discourse is very common in the US.)

In general, though, good article. We must remember that "two steps forward, one step back" is the normal pattern of social progress.
