“Then there’s the tricky way bigotries play out against intermediary groups in society (Jews, Asians), allowing haves and have-nots to share a common enemy”

That line chilled me down to the bone. I have never understood antisemitism before — it simply baffled me — but you may have nailed it. Horrifying.

As to the whataboutery in the rest of it, taking the attention of one horribly mistreated person to complain about other mistreated people doesn’t resolve the issue.

It’s the same short-sightedness that leads people to criticise foreign aid while people are hungry at home. We live on one planet.

If we learn about the whole of history, including our own part in it and the bits we’d rather ignore, we have a better chance of avoiding the mistakes of the past.
