These arguments are powerful, and I say this as a (white) foreigner who used to work in an industry providing services to aid agencies: the biggest progress towards addressing gender inequality globally was Doing The Maths.

The one single factor that makes the most difference to improving the lives of all people in developing countries is "educating girls". When more girls go to school for longer, they marry later, have fewer children who are each more likely to survive, get better jobs (and their children get better jobs) and everyone is wealthier.

Extensive investment has already been made by the World Bank, USAID, UNESCO and others, who say that the global human capital loss from gender inequality is estimated at $160 trillion - twice the value of of global GDP. There's a long way to go, but progress has been made.

Applying that logic to this situation, it's important to distinguish between emotional/moral arguments and logical/rational arguments. You cannot counter an emotional argument with a rational one.

But, when rational decisions are to be made, such as financial regulation and allocation of resources, Doing The Maths may have more impact than any other intervention.
