This is the most important part.

As a researcher, to set my roadmap, I go through the strategy line by line and pull out all of the assumptions. "What would have to be true?"

I then create a parallel ticket on the research backlog: "Find out if it IS true!"

(In a really mature team, we'd do it the other way: do the high-level research in advance, then plan the course of action.)
