We don't typically talk to (or even look at) strangers here because of population density - we're very protective of our personal space, because we don't have much of it.

If you do miss the Santa Monica vibe, check out Brighton, a fashionable seaside city where people are pretty friendly. I've never been to Santa Monica, but Brighton is "twinned" with it.
