We were hardly taught 'grammar' in school - the meta-language of participles and subjunctives was learned later in French. Instead, I learned to write by reading.
Read prolifically; read excessively. Read for hours every day. You'll soon notice that writing that flows naturally mixes long sentences with short, flowery with plain. Wonderful writing is like a meal in a fancy restaurant: the meat is filling and the presentation pleasing with just enough flourishes to thrill without looking padded.
Broaden your vocabulary.
You can even make up words! I recently threw in a 'squeep' to describe the sound of fingers scraping across a guitar fretboard. You know exactly what I mean.
Learn the rules, and then break them. You can boldly go and split that infinitive: nobody cares.
Language is the palette from which you draw your landscape. Use it to show them your dreams.
