You can also write things down to unclog mental space when you’re stressed or anxious. If you’re lying in bed turning a thought over and over in your mind, just roll over and grab a pen or the notes app on your phone and write down that thought, then turn your phone over to block the light and you’ll quickly fall asleep — it’s on the page now, there’s no reason to hold it in your conscious mind.
Last thing at night is a great time to consider any positive challenges, like trying to come up with a creative solution — but it’s also a great time to learn when you’ve completly run out of time.
I used to listen to lectures on Coursera just as I was drifting off to sleep, and hit the ‘stop’ button just as I became aware that I was no longer taking in information. I’d take the quiz the following morning and be pleasantly surprised by how much I’d retained. Of course, it’s better to listen to a lecture when wide awake, but if it’s near-sleep or not at all, definitely dive in at bedtime. I found History courses worked best — a bedtime story, if you will.
