You might be surprised. I grew up in England completely oblivious to the antics of the British in India other than a very vague sense that we'd misbehaved and people were quite cross about it. I still don't know much but I've learned a few bits since that are pretty horrifying.
The discussions about slavery after George Floyd were eye-opening to me as a foreigner, having been brought up to believe that America was this great country.
History was taught in school in sweeping terms - Nazis bad, not much mention of the Communists who were at least as bad but nobody talks about it. We learned in school that slavery had happened, but not in any particular detail, but as we sat here under lockdown having all this stuff come out, it changed forever my impression of the USA.
Nobody looks up to America any more.
Which isn't to say that we mustn't continue to rally against the far right, the far left and extremism of any kind, but that we need to understand that often the greatest ignorance lies with those who think they know, and had no idea that there was more to the story.
